The history of wheel games reflects a long-standing fascination with chance, dating back over two thousand years. The conceptual precursor to modern gambling wheels was symbolized by the Rota Fortunae, an early emblem of fate. Ancient Roman legionnaires wagered on the outcomes of chariot wheel spins, with some of the earliest wheels being paddle or paddle-like devices. It was only in the late 17th or early 18th century that the game of roulette, meaning “little wheel,” emerged and gained popularity across European and American casinos. Despite roulette’s ascendancy, paddle wheel games continue to be played sporadically in certain gaming venues.
In terms of gameplay dynamics, paddle wheels offer a unique visual appeal by displaying their spin vertically, allowing players to easily monitor their wagers as the wheel decelerates. This heightens anticipation, as players watch their chosen outcomes gradually slow down, hoping for a rewarding click that signifies a win. The emotional experience is heightened when players stand in anticipation during spins, only to feel disappointment if their selection does not result in a payout. Compared to other casino games such as keno—where numbers flash rapidly—dice rolls or card games, paddle wheels provide a more extended period of suspense and emotional engagement, creating a distinctive cathartic experience.
This edition of Tri-Wheel® represents an electronic adaptation of the traditional paddle wheel game. Legally wagered in Minnesota since 1987 with some modifications, this electronic version is designed for a 90% payout rate. Each of the three concentric rings operates independently with its own randomization process. Players can select combinations involving at least two rings; when both selected rings hit their target numbers in a single spin, the payout exceeds that of the mechanical version, which lacks independent spinning. The sequential numbering on the wheel facilitates precise wager tracking. For example, “odd” and “even” bets are applicable only to the blue ring and include four red “H” (house) designated numbers where both odd and even bets lose.
As an amusement device, the Tri-Wheel allows virtual wagering via a touch-sensitive multi-player table or through ticket slips similar to lotto plays, capturing all bets per spin. Players may accumulate credits within a “Bank & Setup” area, safeguarded by a two-digit code—a measure that is not overly secure but sufficient for casual competition. Participants can challenge others to see who can amass the most credits over a given period.
Betting on multi-ring combinations involves selecting the “multi-ring combination” option and adjusting each ring’s number via touch controls; leaving a ring blank indicates no wager on that segment. To place exact number bets, players utilize the “single numbers” option, tapping on desired numbers repeatedly to increase their stake. Betting on “Odd” or “Even” applies exclusively to the blue ring; these options can be toggled multiple times according to preferred wager units and are subject to losing if an “H” house number wins.
The game interface provides a “win history” feature displaying wheel diagrams for each ring, alongside hit counts and percentage success rates per segment, aiding players in strategizing. Additionally, up to ten custom multi-wager configurations can be created and tested against historical data spanning up to 1,000 spins, facilitating strategic analysis and decision-making.
